Past Events 2009:
The Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show: 27th-29th March 2009
Our sincere thanks go to the Tick Alert campaign for sharing their stand at the Ordnance Survey Outdoor Show with our charity. We had a hugely successful 3 days, giving out in excess of 3,500 leaflets to interested members of the public. We also talked to many, many people who had been victims of tick-borne disease, and even a few who were currently displaying a classic Lyme disease rash. They've since sought medical assistance. Thanks also to Outdoors TV who gave Tick Alert and BADA-UK a good amount of TV coverage which all helps to raise awareness of this important issue.
Selby Game Fair: 10th-13th April 2009
As every year, our thanks go to the Scottish Association for Country Sports (SACS) for hosting BADA-UK at the Selby Game Fair. The weather was much kinder to us this year, if rather cold, and we talked to lots of interested members of the public. Our thanks also go to everyone who helped to raise funds for us. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year and to meeting new faces.
The National Countrysports Fair: 23rd-24th May 2009
Many thanks to SACS for hosting BADA-UK at the National Country Sports Fair at Moira Demesne, Northern Ireland, again this year. We had a wet couple of days but lots of visitors and lots of reports of tick problems throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland. As always we had a great time seeing old friends and new and we hope to be there again next year.
The Yorkshire Game Fair: 24th-25th May 2009
It was our first time at the Yorkshire Game Fair and we'd like to thank HD Fairs for all their support. Our volunteers enjoyed chatting to members of the public and staff from other organisations and we hope very much to attend the fair again next year. We'd also like to thank Tom Chalmers and Fran Booth for all their support and efforts in fundraising for BADA-UK.
The Welsh Game Fair: 20th-21st June 2009
Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are now unable to attend the Welsh Game Fair this year. We hope very much that we will be there next year.
BASC Wales Country Fair: 27th - 28th June 2009
Our thanks go to the National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO) for hosting us at the BASC Wales Country Fair. We had an interesting weekend, with mixed weather perhaps keeping some visitors away but we still had plenty of interest from the general public. We were visited by several sheep farmers who expressed concern about the growing problem they were having with ticks. We hope to attend more events in Wales next year.
The Scottish Game Fair: 3rd-5th July 2009
Our thanks go to the Scottish Gamekeepers' Association (SGA) for hosting us at the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace. We had another successful show, with many return visitors to our stand as well as new people. We met lots of people who had Lyme disease, or who knew of someone with it and it was good to see some people we'd met during previous shows who were recovering well.
Royal County Game Fair: 4th - 5th July 2009
Our thanks again go to the National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO) for hosting us at the Royal County Game Fair. We had a successful weekend meeting lots of people both from the Berkshire region and beyond. Lots of people welcomed our literature and we met a few people who had been affected by Lyme disease.
Great Yorkshire Show: 14th-16th July 2009
With thank to the Countryside Alliance, we had another good year at the Great Yorkshire Show. With a continuous procession of people taking leaflets, buying tick removal and repellent products, we were kept on our toes pretty much the whole time. As usual, we met farmers who showed concern about the growing tick problem and lots of members of the public who requested information on protecting their animals and themselves.
The Chilterns Show: 18th-19th July 2009
Our thanks go to HD Fairs for providing a stand for us at the Chilterns Show. It was our first time at this event and we had an interesting time talking to people from the local area. Lots of people expressed surprise and concern that ticks were appearing in large numbers where they previously did not seem apparent.
The Irish National Country Fair: 18th-19th July 2009
With thanks to the Countryside Alliance Ireland, we had a very successful first visit to the Republic of Ireland. There was a great awareness about ticks but very little about tick-borne disease or methods of correct tick removal. We had an incredibly busy weekend talking to people and the support was tremendous. We very much look forward to attending again next year and we plan to attend more events in Ireland next year.
CLA Game Fair: 24th-26th July 2009
With thanks to the National Gamekeepers' Organisation and the British Deer Society, we had another very successful year at the CLA. Our two stands were busy with folk requesting literature, tick removers and repellent products. We spoke to several land owners who were committed to taking action to combat the rise in tick numbers and it was interesting to hear from a few gamekeepers what strategies were working for them.
Highland Fieldsports Fair: 7th-8th August 2009
Our thanks go to the Scottish Gamekeepers' Association (SGA) for hosting us at the Highland Fieldsports Fair again this year. Thanks also to the Scottish Association for Country Sports (SACS) for also providing space for our volunteers to be available to talk to members of the public. We had a successful two days with plenty of interest. We also enjoyed putting faces to names when some tick-borne disease sufferers we have supported came to visit us. We hope to see everyone again next year.
Galloway Country Fair: 15th-16th August 2009
Many thanks to the Scottish Association for Country Sports (SACS) for hosting us at the Galloway Country Fair. We enjoyed working with Graham, a new volunteer, while he found his feet answering lots of questions from the public. We had some interesting conversations with a local vet and some landowners about the impact of ticks in the area. We hope to be back again next year.
Midland Game Fair: 19th-20th September 2009
As always, our thanks go to the National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO) for kindly hosting us at the Midland Game Fair. We had a busy time with lots of questions from the public and members of different organisations who are concerned about the impact of ticks on the health of people, pets, livestock and wildlife. We gave out hundreds of leaflets and sold lots of tick-removal and repellent products. Many thanks to everyone who supported our charity by buying lots of tombola tickets! We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones next year.
Past Events 2008:
The Shugborough Game Fair
We would like to give our sincere thanks to SACS (Scottish Association for Country Sports) for inviting us to exhibit with them at the Shugborough Game Fair on the 8th and 9th of March at Shugbrough Hall , near Stafford. Despite the cold, we enjoyed talking to lots of people and we thank everyone who donated items for our raffle or made a donation to help support our work.
The Selby Game Fair
Again, our sincere thanks go to SACS (Scottish Association for Country Sports) for hosting our exhibit at the Selby Game Fair, at Carlton Towers in North Yorkshire, on the 21st - 24th of March. The great British weather certainly made it interesting, with trade tents blowing completely away in the bitter wind and the ground being tested by frost, rain, hail and then several inches of snow. Finally, when the spring sun appeared, the snow melted away and we had the pleasure of thick mud, with vehicles being towed left, right and centre. But, with true grit, everyone coped and a great time was had by most. We'd like to thank everyone who donated items for our raffle and who bought tickets. Our thanks also go to our friend and supporter, Tom Chalmers, and to Rick and Dee Dunn and all the helpers from the East Coast Ferret Rescue, for all their efforts to raise funds for BADA-UK.
Lambton Clay Shoot
Our sincere thanks go to the NGO (National Gamekeepers Organisation), for inviting us to exhibit at the Lambton Park Clay Pigeon Shoot, at Chester-Le-Street in County Durham, on 26-27th April. We also thank the NGO for their generous donation of £1,000, which was presented to us by Stuart Riddell, Chairman of the Northumberland and Durham branch of the NGO. Our thanks also go to all the attendees who supported our work by buying lots of raffle tickets. We had a great couple of days talking to everyone.
The National Countrysports Fair
Thanks to the kind support of SACS (Scottish Association of Country Sports), we attended the National Countrysports Fair, at Moira Demesne, Northern Ireland, again this year. The event was held on May 31st -June 1st and the weekend's weather, despite the drizzly forecast, was absolutely scorching. There was a profusion of lobster coloured bodies and the local shops sold out of sun block. As always, we thoroughly enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting lots of members of the public, who were as supportive as always. We hope to see everyone again next year.
The Royal Highland Show
This year was the first time we have attended the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston in Edinburgh. The event was held on 19-22nd June and the SGA continued their support of BADA-UK by squeezing us in to exhibit along side them in their marquee. The weather remained fine for most of the time and we spoke to lots of people from country-sports and agricultural backgrounds, as well as people who had just come along for a day trip. It wasn't until we were packing up that the heavens opened and we found ourselves wheel-spinning our way out of yet another mud-filled field! Our thanks, as always, go to the SGA for all their support.
The Scottish Game Fair
Thanks again to the SGA (Scottish Gamekeepers Association), for their support and for allowing us to share their stand with them. The weather held for three days with only just a few showers. The tent was extremely busy this year, with so many very interested people. It was also great to meet up with returning friends and fellow Lyme suffers.
The Great Yorkshire Show
This year the Yorkshire Agricultural Society's 'Great Yorkshire Show' celebrated its 150th anniversary and, as part of the celebrations, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended. The event was held on the 8th - 10th July at the Great Yorkshire showground in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. With the kind support of the Countryside Alliance, the BADA-UK team were there to answer questions and to offer advice. Despite the unpredictable weather and the mud, we spoke to lots of members of the public. We also were visited by the President of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Christopher Hall.
CLA Game Fair
A big thank you to the NGO (National Gamekeepers Organisation) and the BDS (British Deer Society) for their warm welcome and their continued support during a 3 day exhibit at the CLA Game Fair. The event was held at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, on Friday 25th to Sunday 27th July 2008.
The Highland Fieldsports Fair
Our thanks go again to the SGA (Scottish Gamekeepers Association) for supporting us for a third year at the Highland Fieldsports Fair. The event was held on the 1st and 2nd of August 2008, at the Moy estate near Inverness. It was lovely to see old friends again but also to discuss variations in tick densities throughout many Highland areas and as far as some of the Scottish Isles. Despite our meeting lots of people we'd talked to before, we also met many new folk who were equally as interested and had tales to tell of there own.
Midland Game Fair
Our sincere thanks go to the NGO (National Gamekeepers Organisation), for again inviting us to exhibit at the Midland Game Fair. The event was held at Weston Park, in Shropshire, on the 20th and 21st of September 2008. We had a great time talking to the general public and to many people professionally involved in land and animal management. Our thanks also go to Kyle Austin and everyone involved in the Plummer Terrier classes, for raising much-needed funds for us.
